Rekind Commences Work on Indonesia’s First Nitrate NPK Plant

PT Rekayasa Industri (Rekind) has officially begun work on the EPCC (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, & Commissioning) project for Indonesia’s first Nitrate-based NPK Plant owned by PT Pupuk Kujang. Located in Cikampek, West Java, the plant is designed with a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year and is projected to be a milestone in the resurgence of the national fertilizer industry’s independence.

“This Nitrate NPK plant marks a significant milestone for the national fertilizer industry because, for the first time, Indonesia is producing Nitrate NPK domestically. Historically, we have imported around 450,000 tons; now we are starting with 100,000 tons at Pupuk Kujang, and moving forward, we aim to dominate the domestic market,” said Rahmad Pribadi, President Director of PT Pupuk Indonesia (Persero), in his remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony held at PT Pupuk Kujang, Cikampek, on Tuesday (Dec 23).

This historic moment was witnessed directly by Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono, Managing Director of Business 2 at PT Danantara Asset Management (Persero) Setyanto Hantoro, Governor of West Java Dedi Mulyadi, Deputy Regent of Karawang H. Maslani, President Director of Rekind Triyani Utaminingsih, along with the Board of Directors of Pupuk Indonesia Group.

The construction of the Nitrate NPK Plant, which is part of the commitment to changes in fertilizer subsidy policies in accordance with Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 113 of 2025, involves an investment of nearly Rp650 billion. With a production capacity of 100,000 tons annually, the potential revenue could reach Rp1.5 trillion. “However, our orientation is not solely business. We will lower the selling price of Nitrate NPK so that farmers, particularly in horticulture, can reduce production costs. Food security is not just about fertilizer availability, but also its affordability,” emphasized Rahmad.

The construction of this facility is not only a symbol of progress but also the realization of a strategic collaboration between two key companies under the umbrella of Pupuk Indonesia Group: Rekind and PT Pupuk Kujang. “The construction project of this Nitrate NPK Plant is a follow-up to the shareholders’ directives. PT Pupuk Kujang has entrusted the execution of this project to Rekind as the nation’s pride in industrial design and engineering, which has been active in the development of various strategic industrial facilities in Indonesia,” explained President Director of Rekind, Triyani Utaminingsih.

This project also reflects a strong commitment to building technological independence, strengthening national engineering capacity, and optimizing value-added industry within the country. “Through this strategic cooperation, we are confident in delivering a project of global standards that is high-quality, efficient, and competitive. This serves as a new milestone for the revival of the national fertilizer industry as the first nitrate-based facility in Indonesia,” asserted Yani.

Nitrate-based NPK fertilizer is proven to increase crop productivity by up to 11.5% compared to urea-based NPK, especially for horticultural commodities. This increase serves as proof that nitrate-based innovation provides real added value for farmers, both in terms of harvest yields and fertilizer usage efficiency.

In addition to being the first in Indonesia, this plant will adopt Fusion Technology Granular Nitrate Base as well as Steam Granulation Semi Reaction technology licensed by Espindesa from Spain, which excels in process efficiency, product homogeneity, and high solubility levels. Furthermore, the plant is designed to operate without generating CO₂ emissions.
